Privacy Policy
Bayan lets you follow your masjid and listen to the khutbahs it publishes, with a summary, verified citations, and action items for each one. Masjids and imams use Bayan to publish their khutbahs. We built it for our own community, and we treat your data the way we'd want ours treated. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the control you have over it.
The short version
- We collect your account details, the masjids you follow, and the notes and saved verses you create.
- When a masjid publishes a khutbah, its audio is sent to trusted AI providers only to produce the transcript, summary, and citations.
- We do not sell your data, show you ads, or track you across other apps.
- You can delete your content, or your whole account, whenever you want.
Who we are
Bayan ("Bayan," "we," "us," or "our") provides the Bayan mobile app and the website at bayanapp.ai. If you have any questions about this policy, reach us at bayanapp.ai@gmail.com.
Information we collect
Account information
When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and a securely hashed password. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email from Google to set up your account; we never see your Google password.
Content you create
When you use Bayan, we store the content you create, including:
- The masjids you follow and the khutbahs you save to your Library;
- Your reflections, notes, saved verses (Wird), and favorites.
If you publish on Bayan as a masjid or imam, we also store the khutbah audio you upload, the transcript, summary, citations, and action items generated from it, and details you add such as the title, speaker, and location of a talk.
Membership information
When you become a member to support a masjid, the payment is handled by Apple and managed through RevenueCat. We receive your membership status (for example, whether it's active) so we can provide the member study aids. We never receive or store your full payment card details; Apple handles billing.
Notifications
If you turn on notifications, we store a device push token so we can send you reminders you've asked for. You can turn this off any time in your device settings.
Diagnostics
To keep the app stable, we may collect crash and performance diagnostics (such as the type of error and basic device/app information). This helps us fix bugs and is not used to identify you personally or to advertise to you.
How we use your information
- To provide the core service: transcribing published khutbahs and generating their summaries, citations, and action items;
- To maintain your Library so the masjids you follow, the khutbahs you save, your notes, and your saved verses are there when you come back;
- To manage your account and membership;
- To send notifications you've opted into;
- To keep the app reliable and secure, fix bugs, and prevent abuse;
- To respond to you when you contact support.
How khutbahs are processed
To turn a khutbah into a transcript and summary, Bayan sends the uploaded audio and its transcript to trusted third-party AI providers (for example, speech-to-text and language-model services such as OpenAI, Groq, and Google). They process the content solely to generate the results and return them to us. We use these providers under their business terms and do not use this content to show you advertising. The specific providers may change over time as we improve the app.
Third-party services we rely on
We share information only with the service providers needed to run Bayan, including:
- Cloud hosting and file storage: to run our servers and store published khutbah audio and your content;
- AI processing providers: to transcribe and summarize published khutbahs (see above);
- Apple and RevenueCat: to process and manage memberships;
- Google: if you choose to sign in with Google;
- Push notification delivery: to send notifications you enable;
- Diagnostics providers: to monitor crashes and performance.
These providers may only use your information to perform services for us.
What we don't do
We do not sell your personal information. We do not show you third-party ads or share your data with advertising networks. We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
How long we keep your data
We keep your account and content for as long as your account is active. When you remove something you saved, it's removed from your Library, and when a masjid unpublishes a khutbah it is removed from listeners' Libraries. When you delete your account, we delete your personal data and the content you created, except where we're required to keep limited records (for example, for tax or legal reasons). Backups are cleared on a rolling basis.
Your rights and choices
- Access and update your account details in the app's Settings;
- Delete your notes, saved verses, and saved khutbahs at any time from within the app, and if you publish, remove any khutbah from your dashboard;
- Delete your account and associated data from Settings, or by emailing bayanapp.ai@gmail.com;
- Manage location and notification permissions in your device's Settings;
- Manage or cancel your membership through your Apple ID subscriptions.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your data (such as access, correction, deletion, or portability). Contact us and we'll help.
Security
We protect your data with encryption in transit, hashed passwords, and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is ever completely secure, but we work to safeguard your information and to respond quickly if something goes wrong.
Children
Bayan is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll remove it.
International users
Bayan is operated from, and your information is processed in, the United States and other countries where our service providers operate. By using Bayan, you understand your information may be transferred and processed in those locations.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, let you know in the app.
